The Familiar Bird Grows More Beautiful: Colleen Chamberlin

Both chickadees and nuthatches are familiar birds. Though they might drift a bit south in their normal range during the winter months, they do not migrate. They are faithful to us in the cold and dark.

Colleen Chamberlin says if she was a bird she’d choose the nuthatch or the chickadee and that her work is her work is for: People who love and appreciate handmade functional pottery.

With functionality comes familiarity. And familiarity brings comfort and affection. The more a thing is able to be used, the more we will use it and come to cherish it. The functional art piece quickly becomes the thing we can not do without. We handle it, we let it fulfill its purpose, then wash it up to use it again. And when it is also beautiful to look at, we proudly display it and enjoy it on a whole other level. It is exactly the thing William Morris meant when he said: Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.

Colleen says:

I love to see forms take shape as the clay slips through my fingers knowing that I’m creating something to be cherished.

My bower would be filled with bright berries and flowers to attract customers to ample flock of my popular garden birds, as well as my mugs, bowls, platters, teapots and other functional pieces.

All beautiful things, are useful things.

Drawing nearer to home and all the familiar things I love.
