Proutopia: A Field Guide

Good Proutopians! Twitchers and Wingers All!

Wendy King here, delivering to you the first post in our Field Guide to Proutopia Festival Art Market. I hope you will find it indispensable in identifying our artists and merrymakers as you make your flight into Proutopia: Birds of a Feather. It’s not exactly a Peterson First Guide, or even a Golden Guide, but I think you’ll find it “Full-colour, Easy-to-Use.”

When we were connecting with our artists, we asked them to tell us what sort of bird they would be. And did they tell us! We got all sorts of answers and ideas from them and we’ll be using them to share their stories.

It is only seems fair that I answer the same question.
So ... I come to you as a homing pigeon.

Homing-type pigeons have a long, (3,000 years) and virtually global, history as the messengers of choice for mail delivery, sport racing, and military use. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, these plucky little birds would be flown out of Paris via balloon and released with messages once they landed (they only fly one way, and that’s home). Many were actually decorated for outstanding service in World War 1.

As a mail delivery system they were known as “pigeon post.” Homing-type pigeons still fly about, raced competitively by fanciers, and have even been used this century in India to send messages during natural disasters.

For this trip, I am proud to soar among them, to deliver to you all the correspondence that’s fit to fly.

My homing GPS is set for 3044 Prout Road.
lat: 50.4984761 long: -97.06856060000001
DMS N50̊29'54.514" W97̊4'6.818"

So ... Fly away home with me to Proutopia: Birds of a Feather landing June 8th & 9th at Runs With Scissors Studio. If you visit runswithscissors.ca you’ll find your flight path (with some fun stopovers) to Proutopia.

Your faithful avian correspondent,
Wendy King p.p. (pigeon post)
