Soaring in Colourful Pairs: Graham & Kristie - Velvet Plume

I fly over the city and I spot - in a backyard of all places - a pair of mallards. The drake has a spectacular emerald head, with a dandelion-yellow bill. His breast is deep chocolate brown with a soft-toned grey body and a gorgeous blue patch in the wing.

The hen is mottled brown.

This is how it is most often in the bird world. The males grab the attention ... except for the Crimson-bellied Conure.

The Crimson-bellied Conure is vivid with leafy green wings and a belly as crimson as geraniums. There are rainbow colours all over it The forehead even has a wee bit of blue and this bird peers at you with a white-rimmed eye.

This is a playful bird. It is clever enough to learn a few party tricks and might even be persuaded to say a few words. The males and females look exactly the same (so no dull camouflage plumage here, they are equally spectacular). That makes this choice of bird ideal for Graham Epp and Kristie Joy:

We chose the Crimson-bellied Conure because it is earthy, yet splattered with jewels. As a husband and wife team, we create every one of our pieces from start-to-finish and are co-creators of Velvet Plume. Our work is made in our home studio and our brick-and-mortar-light-infused sewing studio/shop.

Velvet Plume will bring two lines to Proutopia’s art market:

We create sustainable, one-of-a-kind, fibre-infused, texture-enriched, earthy-hued , meditatively spun wearable textile art for self and home. We will be selling our clothing line & rope basket collection.

These artists are inspired by nature and you can see that in the items they chose for their imaginary bower:

We would display bits of sequins, lace, crystals, wool, leaves, moss, flowers, chocolate and a 1984 Darryl Strawberry rookie card!

They’re bringing their feathery best with a few special things especially for their patrons:

We like to view our patrons/customers and online followers as extended creative tribe. We take great care in our display and go the extra mile to create a unique and welcoming space. We like to attract people to our “buyers” bower with mannequins dressed in our clothing and a beautiful display with our baskets adorning an antique trunk.

The Epps will be welcoming you to their Velvet Plume booth - you’re bound to come away happy with something spectacular added to your own “plumage.”

Feeling like a good preen and a bit of a ruffle.
